A powerful Magnetic storm hit earth Jan 24.

As expected, a CME hit Earth’s magnetic field on Jan. 24th at approximately 1500 UT (10 am EST). The impact produced aG1-class geomagnetic storm and Aurora around the Arctic Circle. Commercial plane will fly at lower altitude due to the G1-class geomagnetic storm (effect on GPS ,communication, etc…)

This is going to be a good day for astronomer and sky watcher (Alaska,Canada,Norway, Montana,…..), get your camera ready.

Volcom Pipe Pro  start of the new 2012 North American ASP season
Solid winter surf is shaping up for the start of the holding period of the Volcom Pipe Pro , January 23, at the Pipeline,Oahu. A $130,000 5-star  (ASP) event that features 112 surfers from around the world, the Volcom Pipe Pro will be held when the forecast will be optimal for surfing conditions between Jan. 23 and Feb. 4

One month after the 2011 ASP World Tour wrapped up at the Pipe Masters, the Volcom Pipe Pro now signals the start of the new 2012 season for those with a goal of qualifying for the ASP ranks.

Defending event champion John John Florence will head the field, joined by top Josh Kerr (Australia),Kolohe Andino (California) , Joan Duru (France), and locals heavy charger , Jamie O’Brien, Dusty Payne.

July 11, 2011 HONOLULU, HI – The first Aloha Boardshop’s Honolulu Fish Fry presented by Oxbow, took place this weekend with scenic weather conditions, light trade winds and a 2-4 ft. south swell at Queen’s break in Waikiki. Hundreds of beach goers were in attendance to enjoy a new type of surf festival that aims to highlight the technical shape and beauty of surfboards.
The weekend long event opened with the team division on Saturday followed by the individuals Sunday. An array of colorful team names and participants dawning stick on mustaches and stocking up on free gelato and sun block lined up to draw from the designated raffle bin and randomly select their “fish tail” surf board for each heat. Oxbow team rider and ASP World Longboard Champion, Duane DeSoto, and his son were on hand to represent the Oxbow team, while legendary Hawaiian longboarder, China Uemura, put together a crew of local beach boys and girl.

The Hawaiian surfer,  has conquered his first  World Longboard title, after beating the French Antoine Delpero, in Makaha, Hawaii,west side.

DeSoto was playing in home waters, in front of friends and family, but showed a great skills to win the Oxbow longboard.

“This feels insane,” DeSoto said. “I’ve been trying for so many years and I’m 33 and I finally got a title. I started doing these when I was 16. I’m just so incredibly happy to be here and it couldn’t get any better”.

In the semi-final, the Hawaiian defeated his fellow mate Bonga Perkins, the 38-year-old experienced longboarder.

2 – Antoine Delpero (FRA) 13.53

I’m 37 and I live on the northern braces of Sydney in a place called Newport. I was first introduced to surfing when I was around seven. I remember being at a BBQ and there was this old beat up surfboard lying under the house – I was fascinated by it. I ended being given it by one of my mother’s friends and my father cleaned it up and fixed it. I used to hassle my parents almost every day to take me to the beach so I could ride it.

I also became interested in photography at a young age. I used to steal my uncle’s camera when he wasn’t using it and play with it. I never even knew if there was film in it so I’d push all the buttons and wait for the click, wondering if it was working or not.

I took up surfing professionally for a while. I did fairly well in a few surfing competitions, travelled a lot, beat a few names that I now shoot from time to time. But I got injured, so I bought a proper camera when I was 21 and then moved to Sydney to focus on my photography. I then assisted Adam Watson, one of Australia’s finest fashion and beauty photographers.

I initially wanted to shoot fashion but the ‘surf photo thing’ slowly took over and I haven’t stopped since then. It’s an exciting time to own a camera. At the moment, I just love what I’m doing and that’s all that matters.

There’s just over one week to go until the Red Bull Illume Unveiling. After months of anticipation, the best 50 photos and the identities of the photographers will be unveiled for the first time on Tuesday August 31st at 7.30pm (GMT) in Trinity College Dublin.

On the night, category winners and finalists from each of the ten categories will be celebrated at the spectacular ceremony and for those who can’t make it in person, showcased on www.redbullillume.com – it’s going to be big!

The overall winner will receive a Leica S2 camera and equipment to the value of €30,000. Each photographer with a photo in the final 50 images will receive one SanDisk Extreme Pro 64GB card, while category winners will receive ten each. The overall winner will receive twenty cards – a year’s supply.

The exhibition will run between August 31 and September 11, 2010. The photos will illuminate the Front Square of Trinity College Dublin every night between 8pm and 10pm and entry is free to the public.
